Who are the #HealthITChicks?

Today, after years of nurturing from the likes of @JennDennard  and countless others, the #HealthITChicks is a closely-knit group of ladies doing their thing from coding and digital marketing to consulting and providing care – all with an eye towards transforming healthcare using technology.

I’m a #HealthITChick from way back, when it was just a Twitter hashtag and not the experience it has grown into. And now for my confession … I’d always kind of felt like a fraud.

Fraudy Feelings and the Imposter Syndrome

Here were all these impressive women harnessing the power of technology, marrying their personal passions with their careers, and I felt like a lurker. Teachable moment: there’s a lot of research about women in technology and the imposter syndrome. Here’s a great article about how to combat those feelings.

Maybe it was when the aforementioned @JennDennard asked me to host one of the #HealthITChicks tweet ups. Maybe it was sitting next to @AmandaHavard at #thebestdinnerpartyever. Or maybe it was just a few months ago when I was struggling with my next career and @MMaxwellStroud asked me to describe my dream job.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for What You Want

So what did I do as I struggled with what was next for me? Fraudy feelings be damned, I got on the horn (or email as it were) and started reaching out to this network of impressive women. If there was one thing I learned from networking on social media with these women it was don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.

Turns out, I had a seat at this table of impressive women all along.

Spoiler Alert: Dream Project Ahead

And the best part? Looks like I’ll be working on a dream project with one of my heroes @MandiBPro, marrying my personal interest in social justice with my experience in health IT.

Take that fraudy feelings, this #HealthITChick is feeling fierce today.
